Vegan Fashion: Resources

Would you like more information about what it means to be vegan, where to shop for shoes, clothing, treats, etc., or what books to read? For the past two years I have been reading and researching everything I can get my hands on. Here are a few of those resources to get you started. Please let me know if you have any questions...and I'm always interested in learning about your favorite books, websites, organizations, etc.
Are you an animal lover? If so, this agency and website is the best resource. No agency is more committed or does more (over the past 50 years!) to end animal suffering and to offer education to those who want to help end animal exploitation than Friends of Animals. Want to see for yourself? It costs very little to become a member and receive their quarterly publication — it is a real eye-opener.

Animal testing is a huge business. The lives of the animals (running in the billions) involved is a life of misery and pain. The good news is that more and more products that are not tested on animals are available. It just takes a little research (see "Animal Testing: A few surprises"), commitment to finding replacement products for those that do test on animals. It sends a message to the business community and saves the needless suffering of many animals.

  • Ginny Hoverman, When I wanted to refinance and get a HELOC a friend recommended Ginny Hoverman of Residential One Mortgage. Not only is she great at what she does (she made the whole process so easy!) but she's a vegan — longtime vegan (nearly 20 years!).

A colleague of mine, Sue Donnelly, is an image consultant in the UK.  We spoke at a an international image conference in May 2007, and she invited me to be interviewed for her monthly newsletter. Her focus was on vegan fashion.  Perfect!  Of course, I agreed immediately.  You can read more here...

Click on "events" (and scroll down) to read Ginger's latest "Vegan Fashion Tip" as well as to learn about what's happening in the area.

  • Would you like a free copy of the booklet "Even if You Like Meat?" If so, I would be happy to send you one. Just e-mail me your address and I will pop one in the mail. Or, you can download the pdf file at:
www.veganoutreach.org (scroll down about half way to see the link).

  • her-design.com
The designs are stylish and beautiful, most styles are vegan-friendly and all are eco-friendly. How can you go wrong! Even Academy Award winner, Helen Mirren owns one.

  • zappos.com/vegetarian.html
Huge selection of vegetarian shoes. Free shipping and free returns! How could shopping be any easier?

  • charmonshoes.com
Looking for elegant, stylish shoes? Charmone Shoes' mission says it all: to create charming women's shoes in harmony with animals, people and the environment. Check them out!

  • alternativeoutfitters.com
They offer a wide variety of vegan options from belts and shoes to clothing and outerwear. A good place to get an idea of what being vegan is all about!

  • vegetarianshoesandbags.com
Just what it says. A terrific selection of casual to dressy shoes and handbags at extremely reasonable prices.

  • hippiechickbakery.com
A fabulous (close to Boston - Amesbury) bakery. For my 50th birthday I got two cakes that were not only vegan but gluten-free as well and everyone loved them!

  • allisonsgourmet.com
Absolutely delicious selection of vegan chocolates, brownies, cookies, gift baskets, etc.

  • pigspeace.org
A beautiful site: "A safe haven for pigs and their friends dedicated to providing a safe home for unwanted, abused or neglected animals."

A great site for learning more about vegetarianism and veganism. Lots to explore.

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS: Empty Cages: Facing the Challenge of Animal Rights
by Tom Regan

Skinny Bitch
by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin

Skinny Bitch This book is not for the faint of heart or anyone who is easily offended. Rory and Kim do not mince words or tiptoe around their subject—the idea of getting healthy and a by-product of getting healthy is getting skinny. They are direct, succinct, and often brash, but they get their point across. If you enjoy edgy writing, to-the-point direction and a good helping of bathroom humor (literally) then you'll have fun reading this book. If not, there are plenty of other vegan books to choose from.

101 Reasons Why I'm A Vegetarian
by Pamela Rice

The China Study: the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted and the startling implications for diet, weight loss and long-term health
by T. Colin Campbell

The China StudyThis book has changed my life dramatically. The research is amazing and the health implications astonishing.
